Vandross and his band's synth player, John "Skip" Anderson, wrote a song called "There's Nothing Better Than Love." Deciding that it would be the song the duo would record as a duet, they began a somewhat laborious tracking process. After placing a few phone calls, the two first got together in Venice, CA, to iron out the details of the collaboration. Hines sung a song called "I Got the Lowest of the Low Down Blues." Vandross was impressed and pleasantly surprised by his performance. Luther Vandross was watching Saturday Night Live when he caught a segment featuring pianist Eubie Blake and actor/dancer Gregory Hines.
